Recharge the Batteries With a Trip to Monchique

Posted on: October 8, 2011

Situated within the two hills, Foia and Picota lies the beautiful Algarve town of Monchique. Unspoilt by the developments of western tourism, this beautiful little town plays host to thousands of visitors every year, all seeking to enjoy the relaxing tranquillity the region has to offer.

Since Roman times, the spa town of Caldas de Monchique has attracted visitors with near-miraculous tales of its natural healing waters. Although not religious in nature, the powerful reputation of the spa waters has meant it has attracted visitors with all manner of illnesses, seeking cures and relaxation from the celebrated fountains. The renovated spa, Termas de Monchique is the most popular destination for visitors, where the soothing spa waters can be enjoyed for a modest fee.

Today the town of Monchique retains the beauty and natural architecture that it was founded upon. Narrow cobbled streets and white-washed, timber-framed houses invite the visitor to a region untouched by the construction and development the Iberian peninsula is so often remembered by.

Sepatating the region of Monchique from the neighbouring Alentejo region is the Serra de Monchique mountain range. Every season brings a new reason for walkers to climb the rugged hill-tops and enjoy the spectacular views the rural Algarve has to offer. Many local companies now offer walking holidays in the Algarve to visitors wishing to discover its spectacular natural beauty through a walking holiday.

Of course, all of the traditional attractions to the Algarve are only a stone's throw away. Walking and spa baths may only be on the agenda for one day, so visitors will be pleased to know that Monchique is only a short drive from the nearby Algarve beaches. Although the attractions to Monchique are undeniable, for many the region will only offer a day or two of entertainment before they head to another village or region of the Algarve.

When a holiday in the Algarve is booked, attention to areas such as Monchique is often overshadowed by the hype and glitz of the coastal towns. Although the area has experienced a growth in tourism, the town and surrounding regions have remained largely unaffected by development and contruction, instead retaining the natural beauty that attracts its visitors. With so many irresistible options to relax, including natural spas and beautiful outdoor walks, Monchique presents itself as the perfect destination for recharging your batteries this winter.
